'Braunschweig Tourist' is a personal portrait of a city by someone
who has never been there. When choosing to visit a foreign city,
one begins a journey of self-recognition, looking for what is familiar
and common language. Though you may never have been to Braunschweig,
you can always read the testimonies of others, wonder at the remarkable
features drawn to your attention and induce some pleasure from their
imagined reality.
Tourist portals such as the internet, construct
the city by encouraging a descriptive relationship with it, perhaps
forming the basis of a desirable location. 'Braunschweig Tourist'
is a work totally constructed from depositories of experience such
as travel guides, civic advertising and photo exchanges.
Impressions of the city collide and reconstruct
like a palimpsest on which the scramble game of identity and relations
is ceaselessly re-written to the sound of German language tapes.
